The story behind the helmet

Meet Joe.

Viking roots.
Space-explorer spirit.
Excellent taste in coffee.

He’s RIKR’s mascot, your familiar face in unfamiliar technology, and the only member of the crew who never takes off his helmet for a coffee break.

The real origin story

A name on a whim.
A character with a purpose.

01 / The name

First came RIKR.

Who knows what a technology company’s name means, anyway? RIKR’s founder, Joshua Price, picked the name on a whim. There wasn’t a grand naming committee or an elaborate origin myth. The name came first. The meaning gave it somewhere to go.

The Old Norse word ríkr carries ideas of being powerful, mighty, great, or magnificent. Historical dictionaries also record rich or wealthy.[1][2] For RIKR, those roots became a modern ambition: help businesses build strength, achieve success, and stand apart.

Power is part of the word’s documented meaning. Success and distinction are how we interpret that inspiration for our business, rather than literal dictionary translations.
Crew’s passphrase: Viking Coffee.

02 / The coffee

Then came a cup of Joe.

His name is a nod to the IT guy’s love of coffee. A cup of joe, a problem worth solving, and somebody who stays curious enough to figure it out. That’s the connection. No complicated acronym required.

Joe is a familiar word for coffee.[3] For our mascot, it also makes a futuristic, armored explorer feel like somebody you could call when your laptop has chosen a particularly inconvenient moment to stop cooperating.

He may look ready for the next dimension. He still appreciates a familiar ritual before the day begins.

Power

Technology that gives your team more capability.

Success

Progress measured by what your business can do.

Distinction

A team, and a character, you’ll remember.

RIKR’s geometric aqua emblemOld inspiration. New geometry.
03 / The mark

A Viking idea.
A designer’s “what if?”

The logo’s story is refreshingly human, too. A contracted designer suggested a geometric direction, essentially a “what if we tried this?” The inspiration was Viking; the final form became the angular, connected mark you see on Joe’s armor and shield.

It’s a modern brand symbol, rather than an ancient rune with a secret translation. The geometry belongs to RIKR’s visual identity. The sense of strength and exploration connects it to the story.

The legend we give him

From longships to starships.

The company story above is real. The voyage below is Joe’s fictional backstory, built around the character and values behind the brand.

Joe standing guard beside a protected data system

A curiosity bigger than the horizon.

In Joe’s story, the horizon has always looked more like an invitation than an ending. He comes from an imagined crew of makers, navigators, and practical problem solvers. When something breaks, he wants to understand it. When somebody is stuck, he wants to help. When the map ends, he starts asking better questions.

His first instinct isn’t to charge ahead. It’s to check the equipment, learn the route, and make sure the crew can follow. The shield is there to protect people. The tools are there to keep them moving. The coffee is there because some traditions deserve to survive a change of planet.

The ship changed. The job didn’t.

As Joe’s world moved from sea routes to star routes, wood gave way to metal, a sail became an engine, and the map became a network. He kept the same habits: prepare carefully, explore thoughtfully, and never leave the crew guessing about what comes next.

That’s why he’s both a Viking and a space explorer. The Viking side connects him to RIKR’s name and the idea of venturing beyond familiar waters. The space-explorer side points forward. Technology keeps creating new territory, and RIKR is here to help your business navigate it.

Always a teammate. Occasionally a legend.

These days, you’ll find Joe wherever the crew needs him: connecting communications, working through a support problem, standing guard, or looking toward the next horizon with a mug in hand. He represents the spirit of the people doing the real work behind RIKR: approachable, resourceful, protective, and interested in what’s possible.

His mission isn’t to make technology look mysterious. It’s to make the future feel like somewhere your team can go.

Sources behind the story

A little research.
A lot of imagination.

The founder’s naming, mascot, and logo-design stories are RIKR’s own account. Joe’s adventures are fictional. The language and historical notes above draw on these sources.

  1. University of Texas at Austin, Linguistics Research Center: Old Norse Online. The entry for ríkr gives great, powerful, and magnificent.
  2. Geir T. Zoëga, A Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic: ríkr. Records mighty/powerful, strong, magnificent, and rich/wealthy. Digital transcription.
  3. Merriam-Webster: joe. Documents its use as a word for coffee; the phrase’s precise origin is not treated here as settled.
  4. Parks Canada: L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. Describes the Norse exploration base in Newfoundland around AD 1000.
  5. National Museum of Ireland: Horrible Helmets. Explains why horned Viking helmets belong to popular imagery rather than the historical equipment represented by surviving finds.
